Sydney’s Love Birds: Same-Sex Penguin Couple Welcomes Their New Baby

History was made in Australia, as the country’s first gay penguin couple, Sphen and Magic, have successfully hatched a foster egg.

Living in the Sydney Aquarium, the same-sex couple built a nest to fostered an egg together. The egg hatched and the two male penguins were more than happy to welcome their yet-to-be-named chick into the world.

The official word about the baby Gentoo penguin came out on the Aquarium’s social media page, opening a shower of Awws! and emojis.

Called ‘Sphengic’ for now, an affectionate name given to the chick by well-wishers online by combining his parents’, the baby will remain ungendered and unnamed for the next two months.
