Richard Overton, 112, of Austin died Thursday afternoon at the age of 112. Not only was he the oldest veteran, but also the oldest man in the US. He had been hospitalized with pneumonia and his death was confirmed to CNN by Shirley Overton, a family member.
The secret to his longevity may have been his daily cigars and whiskey, but he told in 2015 that it was simply “God’s work”. He served his country from 1940-45 and was honored by former President Barack Obama.
“You don’t know when you get here, you don’t know when you go, it’s in God’s hands” -Richard Overton.
Thank for your service Sir. RIP! 🙏🏾🇺🇸
