South Carolina’s Largest Jackpot Winner Wishes To Remain Anonymous

From the Mega Millions lottery held in October 2018, the winner finally comes forward to claim the $1.5 billion jackpot nearly five months after the drawing, officials said Monday. The mystery of whether anyone would ever come forward to say they had won has ended. With only 180 days from the draw date to claim the prize, the winner almost ran out of time to take home the big bucks.

This is the largest jackpot payout to a single winner in US history, according to a statement by the South Carolina Education Lottery Commission. The winner, however wishes to remain anonymous. There are very few states that allow lottery winners to keep their identities secret, the states being South Carolina, Delaware, Georgia, Kansas, Maryland, North Dakota, Ohio and Texas.

“We respect the winner’s decision to remain anonymous, and we will honour the winner’s wishes”, said Hogan Brown, the commission’s executive director. “We are delighted that the winner is a South Carolinian and has come forward to claim this remarkable prize.” The winner chose the one-time payment cash option, making their prize worth nearly $878,000,000.

This not only benefits the winner but also the state of Carolina. The KC Mart convenience store in Simpsonville, where the winning ticket was sold, will receive $50,000 for selling the winning ticket. “The State of South Carolina will benefit from $61 million that will be collected in income taxes from the winner,” said Brown.

The highlight of the winning is how the winners decision that day had led up to them purchasing that ticket. They let another customer go ahead of them in line to buy a Mega Millions ticket before them. “A simple act of kindness led to an amazing outcome,” reads the statement from lottery officials. The winning numbers were 5,28,62,65, 70 and the mega number 5 which were selected by a Quick Pick.
